Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Ah, Marilyn. You knew one of her movies would make an appearance on my blog, didn't you? Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was actually the first film I'd watched starring Marilyn Monroe, and it remains one of my favorites even now. This is also the film that contains that famous musical number, Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend, where she wears that iconic pink dress, making it a perfect film to talk about on a girly blog.
However, this film is not actually all about Marilyn. It is actually about two showgirls who are best friends, but tend to see things a bit differently. Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe), is especially inclined to marry a wealthy husband, and is in fact engaged to a wealthy, though nerdy gentleman named Gus Esmond, while her best friend, Dorothy Shaw (played by Jane Russell) is more attracted to handsome, fit men - regardless of their income level.
Gus's father disapproves of his son's relationship with Lorelei, though, and consistently tries to stop them from marrying. So, when Lorelei and Gus decide to travel to Paris via ship, not only so that Lorelei and Dorothy can perform, but so that Lorelei and Gus can finally get married, it is not surprising when Gus's father intervenes and keeps Gus from traveling with them. Lorelei and Dorothy still must go, of course, and though Lorelei is warned to behave, she still gets into a bit of trouble chasing after diamonds, getting caught by a private investigator hired by Gus's father.
It's a very amusing film, with a number of incredible songs - even the first, I'm Just a Little Girl From Little Rock, is one that I would recognize anywhere solely from the first few notes. It's definitely worth a view!
